Psychological and Social Impacts of Parental Separation and Divorce on Children

Project No: 2025-1-RO01-KA220-ADU-000358003

November 2025 – November 2027

About the Project

Safe Space brings together five organisations from Romania, Türkiye, Greece, and the Netherlands in an adult education project that aims to equip key adults – parents and professionals – supporting children through parental separation with trauma-informed tools. It delivers this support both digitally and in person through an evidence-based e-learning platform, an immersive digital training tool, and hands-on training programmes.

Why This Matters

Approximately 1.9 divorces occur per 1,000 inhabitants yearly across Europe, and children exposed to parental separation face a 20-30% increased risk of mental health issues, learning difficulties, and reduced social integration. Single-parent families – particularly in disadvantaged or rural areas – are three times more likely to experience economic hardship, and in many regions divorce still carries social stigma. Parents facing this process often turn to unverified general sources (e.g., AI chat tools) rather than specialist guidance, while professionals frequently lack structured training in trauma-informed intervention. The project directly targets parents experiencing separation and professionals working with affected families (educators, youth workers, social workers, mental health professionals), and indirectly targets policymakers and the children themselves.

Objectives

  • Map the knowledge and competency gaps of key adults supporting children through parental separation
  • Equip adults with practical tools for trauma-informed intervention
  • Empower adults to take action and drive positive change within their communities
  • Raise awareness among parents, professionals, the community, and policymakers
  • Develop the competences of professionals working with families
